Vettel soars to home Grand Prix pole position

Sebastian Vettel has never won the German Grand Prix at Hockenheimring and he may never get a better chance to do so than Sunday's race, after qualifying on pole position.
A blistering 1:11.212, a new track record, jumped the Hesse native ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the last knockings of Q3 after the Finn had set his own personal best time.
Kimi Raikkonen couldn't put together a perfect run in the evidently faster Ferrari and he starts third, ahead of Max Verstappen and the two Haas cars.
The absence of Lewis Hamilton from the top ten was due to a hydraulic issue at the end of Q1, caused by the Mercedes man running wide at Turn 1.
He is set to start in 14th despite a futile attempt to push his car home, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo at the very back due to engine penalties.
